where a user is trying to network a WinXP PC with a Win98SE, or some other version on Windows

i have experienced this problem. i have a home LAN with a LinkSys wireline cablemodem gateway/router connecting several Win98 machines and never had any problem, but when i connected a WinXP machine, it would not recognize the other machines, even after i loaded the configuration floppy (created by the XP machine) on the 98 machines. so i cannot do file and printer sharing between 98 and XP machines, although all machines are able to operate through the router for Internet access.
