Dealing with Iraq clearly requires US leadership -- if we send signals of pure unilateral policy, the world will coalesce to oppose us. But if we play our cards right and use our strengths to build support for our positions, there is almost nothing we cannot achieve. The Bush regime change policy was received by the rest of the world as a purely unilateral policy on a highly sensitive issue -- invading a another country and overthrowing the government. That was the problem with it. "Disarm or else" using the UN leads down the same road -- but we stand a better shot at rallying the whole world behind us by showing that WE can use the UN effectively. It might be too late for that now -- we will see.
