The linkage between the manufactures and the operating companies is undeniable. The operating companies can't turn the capex spigot off even if they wanted to. Since Lu has VZ sole source on 5ESS gear as an example. ....lucent says "Better buy our DDM gear or we obsolete our 5ESS parts" Many believe the survival of LU is a national security issue. Perhaps the biggest wildcard in all of this will be political. At some point we'll see some form of government pump priming under the guise of "improved communications to fight the war on terrorism" or some other method of moving money into the company coffers. After all micheal powell is colin powell's son. Gotta believe the chairman of the FCC gets free airplane tickets to the ranch in texas.
