He "made his bones" reporting from Galveston during a major Hurricane that had caused the city to be evacuated. He is about as "Texan" these days as you.

My impression was that he did it via his reporting of the Kennedy assassination and later of his confrontations of Nixon when he was CBS White House reporter.
