My understanding is that Applix is not a complete Java product. It is basically a server product where all the formatting and document content is on a server. The client side is a java program that displays the data that has been formatted on the server. This is closer to a Citrix or PC Anywhere type product where the client acts as a smart terminal client for an application that is on the server. The server application is not written in Java and is not subject to the same printing restrictions as Java.

The WordPerfect Java applications would be closer to the Coopers Peters products that MS bought. They are true Java products and also do not have sophisticated printing. True WYSIWYG printing is not needed for many applications, but would be expected from a "WordPerfect" word processor even if it only had a subset of the WordPerfect 8 features. It is not possible to retrieve proper print metrics and render to them in the current release of Java.

That said, I do not believe that Corel is specifically waiting for the 1.2 release of Java. There has been enough information in the press to indicate that there is a big resource shift taking place in the company to Java including some new products. It is not a huge stretch to believe that some shifts in Java product focus is taking place at the same time.

Whether this should be having an impact on the stock I don't know, but certainly Corel is betting on Java to have a big impact on earnings next year.
