SunSoft was supposed to find new sources of revenue from software products that were not directly related to or bundled with Sun hardware. Solaris x86, for example, was created with and by SunSoft. Like the other Sun "planets" of the early 90's, SunSoft was a failed experiment, which is why they were folded back in 96 or 97.

See thats what I call a software company though, and sun couldn't pull it off. Java doesn't count, its not a packaged app, sold for platform independent revenue. Iplanet is something you buy but it isn't winning the war.

I think their biggest opportunity now in software is that "linux by solaris" product I read about in the article. Is that out yet, maybe that can beat red hat on an itanium which is what HPQ is selling.
