Gary: I heard those calls at issue. Brinker has a unique, memorable
and 3-dimensional style, no question. My interpretation of Brinker's
methodology would suggest that the individual callers are not the
real focus of the show. They are vehicles by which Brinker can speak
to a much larger audience about the matters in question. Therein is
the difference between a private and a very public conversation.

Each caller doubtless represents an issue, problem, or concern of
more than a few listeners. Each caller is a paradigm if I may employ
that overused word in its proper application. As such, the reactions
Brinker may have to a particular caller may seem exaggerated if one
applies the mores and expectations applicable to a private conver-
sation. Bruce Williams, with title to the longest running call-in talk
show on radio, employs a technique similar to Brinker's, i.e., speaking
to his audience in no uncertain terms through the caller. Sometimes,
one must throw a big rock to make a big splash.
