Les: I think it's safe to say that we won't (at least in my lifetime) see "meaningful" tax reform from either the Republicans or Democrats, regardless of which political party is in power. At best we'll have minor tweaking, but nothing substantive. Both parties are too beholden to people who benefit from the current tax code, from churches to tax lawyers.

To avoid raising taxes for the middle class, the strategy should be obvious: Go after dubious tax shelters, tax frauds, tax cheats with a vengeance and make sure every individual and corporation pays their fair share.

I paid taxes every year 1996-2000, but Enron only paid taxes one of those five years.
