the only people who say this are people who haven't customized it personally and used it long enough....

i didn't like the hockey puck mice either, but apple had the most successful launch of any computer from any box maker.... EVER .... TWICE.....with the hockey puck mouse.....they are using an optical mouse now, actually a very nice one....
and Two button and three button mice have been long researched by apple before MSFT even knew what a Mouse was, let alone a gui, and apple came to the conclusion that one button mice work much much better, after testing two and three button mice..... you can get work down faster using the inputs that apple has set up, both sides of your brain are used..... projects come out faster and better if you are using both sides of your brain...... both with your eyes, and with your motor skills as input.....
there is a reason why there are so many studies out showing that Mac users are more productive...... Apple has put a lot of research into the user experience, including the mouse.... and why most creative types like the apple user experience over a Wintel environment.....
Wintel's environment was designed by engineers with about as much finesse as a Civil engineers sewer layout...... the only things Wintel's get right are after they copy what apple is doing..... and usually they are extremely bad copies.... like the profile 4 from gateway...... or the emachines copy of the imac.....
but if you want to cripple the creative side of your brain's productivity when using a computer, go buy a two button mouse..... its not that hard.....
and QT interface? what in the world is wrong with QT?
If MSFT gets everything right, then they will finally get everything right, same with any company...... i'm not holding my breath for any company...... let alone MSFT....
you don't understand licensing at all, Apple was the biggest and most profitable Box maker WITHOUT LICENSING, until they kicked jobs out, and tried to be a Clone maker and licenser, (with this time span of Jobs being gone, and apple under the control of mind numbing bean counters, Apple was crippled, Apple could have taken half the market share if it stayed on the course that they finally reverted too) Apple started dying when they were just another clone maker with no creativity with Jobs gone, and they started dying quickly...... as soon as Jobs came back, and killed off the clones, Apple turned around on a dime.... and was again extremely successful at making money.....
the only thing apple needs is innovation..... when they innovate, they make more money, that is as simple as it gets...... no "licensing" structure will make more money for a box maker, AS THE REST OF THE BOX MAKERS ARE FINDING OUT THE HARD WAY.......
Apple is the only profitable box maker, not even Dell is making a profit, (Dell is hiding a huge expense in ESOs, look at how much more they spent buying back stock, more than they made), Price wars have no winners.... Apple was always smart not to be doing such stupid things, same with Mercedes, same with BMW......
go ahead and match up the time lines with when apple tried "licensing" and kicked out Jobs and what their stock did...... if you want to know how apple would have done since then if they continued licensing instead of innovating, look at CPQ, and you will see that instead of making profits, apple would be losing money by now......
and calling apple bad designers because of being egotistical.....well....... you need to go back and use windows98 for about 10 minutes to get your perspective back to planet earth....
