Re: "the leadership should have realized that a great amount of work and effort was required to overcome the problem."
What sort of work and effort would have prevented what started before Bush started? I'm confident your idea of solutions, I wouldn't expect to work. It is beyond us, save if we choose true unfettered Economic Freedom(indeed, without government attempts to help, i.e. without interference), in the long and short run.
Tax cuts, I believe, are only beneficial to our economy, hence I do not believe the Economy has been ignored(among other reasons- though not all good, not death knells, IMO!).
Democracy is certainly not dead if Republicans get both Houses by full majorities, let alone one. That would mean Democracy is working, just not for the Democrats who've dominated the Congress to an extent the Republicans have not, for a long time. Republicans, I believe, can do some significant good in that position of control which they've not held for many decades.
The Isreali/Palistinian problem hasn't been solved in Bush's year and a half...boo hoo, he must be ignoring it, Clinton, after all, solved it many times over. Don't forget Carter, he solved it many times over too, LOL.
