Taiwan Semiconductor Denies Report of Wafer-Plant Equipment Delay
Wednesday September 18, 10:17 pm ET

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Thursday denied local media reports it is further delaying the installation of equipment at its second 12-inch wafer plant to August 2003.
"There is no such plan and under this economic situation, it is too early to make any final decision, said Jesse Chou, TSMC's public affairs manager.

Mr. Chou's comment came after the Commercial Times reported that TSMC plans to further postpone the installation of equipment to August from the first quarter or second quarter next year.

TSMC, the world's largest dedicated chip foundry, still targets to install the equipment in the first quarter of 2003, he said.

TSMC said earlier this month that it was putting off the equipment installation for its second 12-inch wafer plant -- located in Tainan -- to the first or second quarter next year, from the previously planned fourth quarter of 2002.

Mr. Chou also denied the report that said the delay may affect the company's plans to increase its monthly 12-inch wafer production capacity to 25,000 wafers by end-2003.

He said 25,000 wafers is the full capacity and that the company has yet to set a monthly production target.
