Italy's Jewish, Muslim groups protest crucifix bill
By DPA
ROME - A proposed bill to hang crucifixes in public offices, schools and train stations throughout Italy has sparked protests by Muslim and Jewish groups.
Presented by Italy's Northern League, a xenophobic party in Silvio Berlusconi's ruling coalition, and supported by Catholics in government, the bill follows a recent appeal from Pope John Paul II to make crucifixes more visible.
On Tuesday, Italian Education Minister Letizia Moratti told parliament the cross would remain in state schools and hospitals as "a symbol of Christian civilization, its roots and its universal values, all of which are essential elements of the historical and cultural heritage of our country."
About 85 per cent of Italians profess to Catholicism. Italy also has a small Jewish community while the number of Muslims is increasing.
Northern League lawmaker Federico Bricolo, who presented the bill in parliament Tuesday, said the cross would remind "insolent Muslims where they are."
On Monday Abdel Smith, leader of the extremist Italian Union of Muslims, drew furious reactions by likening the crucifix to a rotting cadaver.
Jewish leader Amos Luzzatto said the idea of hanging crucifixes in public offices dates back to the fascist era.
Center-left lawmakers have compared the bill to a "crusade."

Now Len, did you notice that that Italian lawmaker Bricolo didn't finger the Jews in his Parliament address? Indeed, he wanted to lecture "the insolent Muslims" only... Why didn't he mention the "insolent Jews" as well??
