Hopefully, this is only a start, Palestinians: IDF tanks enter Arafat's Ramallah compound By Ha'aretz Service and Agencies IDF tanks entered Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat's headquarters compound Thursday, Palestinian security officials said, hours after a suicide bomber blew himself up on a Tel Aviv bus, killing five people.
Asked whether troops were operating in Arafat's headquarters, an IDF spokesman said the army was engaged "in an operational activity and has raised the state of alert."
Troops reimposed the blockade of the compound, Channel Two Television reported. IDF troops inside the compound shot and seriously injured a Palestinian wanted by Israel, the station said. The man later died of his wounds.
An official inside the compound said the tanks had advanced to the area of a helicopter landing pad outside Arafat's office building, located in a central section of a large building.
The Palestinian officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said two guards were injured during the incursion.
A short time earlier, the army imposed a curfew on all Palestinian areas in the West Bank, with the exception of Hebron.
The curfew is primarily focused on the northern city of Tul Karm and its surrounding villages. IDF troops in the cities arrested a number of suspects. |
