It's true that the days of beating the joneses are over. However, there are fundamental forces at work today that will eventually push networking gear sales north again. Some of those forces include video on demand, video/music swap services like Bearshare and Napster clones, broadband gaming, IP video conferencing, and telecommuting using broadband/VPN services. These forces alone are enough to drive exponential growth in bandwidth usage as they grow into maturity. Don't count the Internet driven economy out yet. It's early yet. I find it's useful to think in terms of 5 year incremental periods or in terms of decades even in order to force myself to focus on the big picture. It's tough though, when the last 3 years have bashed the crap out of all of our theories.
