I think it was a meteor.

That wasn't my first instinct because I have seen meteors skip across the atmosphere before and it leave a thin tail. This tail was very wide, like the missles that they shoot over the pacific. The difference with this one was it was heading toward us and we could see the object light up very brightly coming directly at us.
