jw, Those comments out of German by the justice minister and Schroder is what we have been talking about for months.
That is, the anti-American sentiment that is developing around the world. Without the presence of the old Soviet Union, this feeling is going to grow worldwide. The only way to slow it down is for the US leadership to take the world view more seriously. That may happen a few months from now OR after Bush is ousted in the next election.

It is mind boggling why US won't agree to Kyoto..sure there is a cost but credibility is also on the line. The world's superpower should take the lead role in this very serious issue. This is just one example.
You can also bet how media in other countries around the world is not going to see (for example) the arrest/detaining and sometimes interogation without arrests of so many Muslims (Al Quaeda, Taliban, and regular US citizens) the same way John Ashcroft does. The world's superpower should be setting the example in human rights. I don't think the Europeans see the US having the higher moral ground. That also creates anti-US sentiment.

The way Schroder's party is gaining because of the ANTI-WAR talk is very ironic. The reverse would happen in the US...war rhetoric means Bush has higher approval.
Something seems very wrong with this even if attack on Iraq is the right decision.
It may not be about the decision itself. It is more of a reflection of society. That is troubling, imho.

Societies that hate war are going to win out in the long run.....why?...because on a deeper level they are probably right....they MUST be right. I am not talking about government decisions. I would prefer to see the US public against attacking Iraq while Bush is all for it..it should not be seen as a decision that is based upon what the average joe wants to happen.

I think we are probably just seeing the tip of the iceberg in anti-US sentiment worldwide. I feel it feelings will grow for a while longer before reversing sometime in the future.
