What they have done is build a network in downtown Auckland running 80211b with smart stuff which gives solid coverage. Their plan is to expand that to 100 square kilometres [10km x 10 km] in central Auckland and other New Zealand cities, which would prove the system prior to global rollout.

This is no WiFi hotspot stuff. This is ubiquitous, guaranteed 330Kbps 80211b coverage out to the edge of their network.

The cost is apparently much lower than building out a cdma2000 network. Cisco has the gadgets and RoamAD has the algorithms which enable 80211b [and upgrades] to do tricks to make it into a broad coverage network.

No base stations and big poles, no town planning red tape, rapid and cheap rollout. As far as I can tell, they have the weaknesses of 80211b sorted out.

CDMA would fill in the long-range gaps in suburbs and countryside, with 80211b doing the dense population areas. Devices, which are increasingly including 80211b components, would be able to use the cost-effective high speed 80211b network, then roam onto cdma2000 networks. With radioOne, multimode and multiband, devices will gain a lot of flexibility in roaming and shopping for cheap service providers.

It looks good to me.
