House Panel Secures Help in Britain for Inquiry
The New York Times
September 19, 2002

By SIMON ROMERO

Following is an excerpt from Mr. Romero's article

"The House Energy and Commerce Committee said yesterday that it was widening its
investigation of business practices at Global Crossing and
Qwest Communications
after securing the cooperation of two British
telecommunications companies.

Flag Telecom and Cable and Wireless have agreed to provide the committee with testimony and documents related to their dealings with Qwest and
Global Crossing, Ken Johnson, a committee spokesman, said yesterday.

Both companies are thought to have swapped capacity on fiber optic networks with their American counterparts to convince investors that their
finances were healthy, a practice that preceded the current crisis in the telecommunications industry.

The committee has scheduled one hearing for Tuesday and plans to schedule another for October."
