I don't think anyone knew the willingness to beat the Jews to death was so close to the surface. More Jews would have left (imo) if they had known. One of the truly horrible things about group hate, is its ability to morph into something deadly so quickly that there is little or not change for escape. My point was- perhaps I made it badly- that the it is not initially planned for, but that once it takes off, it is like an out of control fire.
