Yes, I really do think that market timing is futile. It's been studied over and over again. The problem with evidence in favor of timing is it's all anecdotal. I believe that the best approach is a modified buy and hold, wherein you buy a company with good fundamentals and reasonable valuations reflecting those fundamentals and hold until the fundamentals (expected growth or liquidity or inventory turns etc) deteriorates.

The whole point behind technical analysis is trading. Ultimately, stocks move in response to earnings, growth expectations, and the general market, so if you're using financial analysis to choose your stocks and holding them for at least an intermediate term (say one year)why even bother with T/A? If you set your buy and sell points on a valuation basis it seems to me that, regardless of the dubious merits of T/A, T/A is superfluous.

Regards,

Paul
