Mike I share your concern about owning Sun Microsystems at this time. If you have followed this thread you would know that I have been one of the most vocal cheerleaders for Sun Microsystems over the past 4 years or more. I , at one time held 48,000 shares of the stock.

I was "rich" during the telecom/dot.com boom. I unfortunately didn't get out of Sun Micro fast enough. I was fortunate to have preserved a small portion of my assets by selling a little at a time on the way down. I thought that this was the best run company with a product and a concept that would allow it to dominate the hardware/software space.

Now I am totally out of SUNW. I fee very differently. PArtly a problem with the state of the economy and a greater part a problem with Sun Micro itself.

I would get out of SUNW as soon as possible (on any jumps in price). This is why: Buyers of high range hardware are finding alternatives to the high margin Sun Micro equipment. There is no reason for them to pony up the money for the incremental increases in speed that SUNW always crows about. Also SUNW's storage and general software isn't so "hot" as compared to Microsoft or in the UNIX space LINUX is the place to be for Big "iron". IBM is promoting it like mad now. Also, JAVA is free for all so big deal that SUNW invented it. They never controlled it. Since they never controlled JAVA, they never made any money from it.

In summary, I would sell SUNW in my opinion only, because I feel they have made significant business mistakes over the years (like not melding with MSFT desktop, not made JAVA proprietary, not got into the low end desktop years ago) and generally they have "missed the boat" by not sufficiently diversifying their profit centers and businesses.

The future IMHO looks bleaker than ever. I am only sorry I didn't sell when Zander left and Lehman left. That should have been taken as a sign.
