I have yet to read a reasonable explanation for Schevardnadze's failure to control the "terrorists/freedom fighters" that are hiding out in Georgia. Is it sympathy? Or is it an inability to control the area? Not sure. As I understand it, the Pankisi is very isolated and independent in spirit historically. The Georgian government doesn't seem to have much sway. On the other hand, I have a feeling Shevardnadze isn't shedding any tears over Russian entanglements in Chechnya. I'll have to do some reading. Derek
