The excess margin in each account will be the same

I don't think this is always the case. It might depend on which broker you use. I believe that in most cases you will have more excess margin with the short put. In any case, if you have two accounts with $10,000 and you only take the CC position or the short put position (and no other positions) then the yield for the two accounts should be the same. If you are not putting the excess margin to work elsewhere, any differences between the accounts make no difference to your bottom line.
