If you're trying to entertain, then keeping people in suspense has value. If you're trying to make a point, however, I think the tell them what you're going to tell them, tell them, and then tell them what you told them approach works best. I like metaphors, allegories, etc., but I prefer to be told up front that that's what it is. Otherwise, I miss a lot wondering what the hell is being communicated. In written form, that's not so much of a problem because you can go back and review to see what you missed. Orally, I think my response would be rolled eyes.
