The Presidential betrayal of the Kurds was a most shameful episode.

It's amazing how few people are even aware of it.... It just doesn't impinge on the public's consciousness.

(I guess it's more pleasant to ignore shameful, dark corners of our history... to wipe them from memory.)

We (Bush 41) made a choice to not support their Democratic aspirations. We preferred to hope for a coup d'etat that would kill Saddam and install a compliant Iraqi dictator from within their military ranks - someone who would play ball with our oil companies... not a messy, unpredictable Democracy that would upset our Royalist 'allies' in the House of Saud and in Kuwait.
