Israeli retaliation to an Iraqi attack would not necessarily be automatic, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's office said last night, denying a report on the front page of Sunday's New York Times.

Under the headline, "Israel Tells US It Will Retaliate if Iraqis Attack," the newspaper reported that Sharon has informed the Bush administration that he plans to strike back if Iraq attacks Israel.

Quoting Israeli and Western officials, the report says Sharon's statements were made privately to senior American officials in recent weeks.

Sharon's office objected to the unequivocal phrasing of the headline, which would leave no room for Israel to accept an American request to not respond to such an attack, or to disregard an off-target missile attack with no casualties.
