AIX migration to Linux from CSN
Here's What IBM Meant To Say g2news.com
IBM hosted an analyst meeting the other day on its servers. And, well, you know how big companies sometimes have trouble speaking in clear, concise declarative sentences. What IBM was really trying to say, in its own muffled way, is that AIX is going to turn into Linux and that the recalcitrant AIX-based pSeries, which hasn't exactly been towing the company's Linux line, is going to be put at Linux' disposal as best it can considering it'll take four or five year for Linux to be the equal of AIX. This little bit of news should be of interest to both Sun and HP, both of whom mouth platitudes about Linux while secretly regarding it as a toy operating system and doing their darnedest to see that their customers stay proprietary. See, IBM wants to keep Power as a platform and figures Sun is running the risk of losing Sparc to Linux-on-Intel. So, IBM is reportedly going to invest both above and below the operating system in stuff that both AIX and Linux can use and work to close the gap between them as quick as it can, a situation in which it's hamstrung by the peculiarities of open source. As proof of the pudding, IBM has vowed to bump AIX off the pSeries and deliver it running Linux by itself, no help from AIX. Partitioned, the boxes will be able to run both as the same time. IBM will be upping Linux' Power 4 support.
Given the collaboration between MigraTEC and IBM (see previous post), this announcement bodes well for 32Connect (Unix to Linux ) migration projects. The question is wether IBM will port or re-write the code (e.g. as they did for Tivoli).
