Calif ISO Sees 1,700 MW Old Capacity Shut By Next Summer

NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- Independent power producers in California may decommission up to 1,700 megawatts of older generating capacity by next summer, according to Terry Winter, president and chief executive officer of the California Independent System Operator.

Forward power market prices currently don't economically justify retrofitting many old gas-fired plants with expensive new equipment needed to meet pollution standards, Winter said. He declined to name which plants are slated to be closed.
