Even though BA has deeper pockets, LOR builds a better satellite, (maybe a little prejudice here). Ba has lost several contracts to LOR over the years because of poor engineering. People go to BA first, Get really upset at their piss-poor quality, and then go to LOR. Example:
Intelsat-VI. It was initially to be up to 9+ birds, but BA only built 3. That was because of poor engineering. Intelsat-VI was a spinner. And with spinning satellites, you have to de-spin the antennas so that the antennas appear to be stationary while the rest of the satellite spins. Only problem was, the de-spun mass was too large in proportion to the rest of the satellite and there were stability problems among others. So in effect, you had a tail wagging the dog situation. This is not smart. So Intelsat came back to LOR for I-VII & I-IX. LOR uses 3-axis stabilization which are 2 internal gyroscopes to stabilize the bird. It is more expensive, but more reliable. Also BA has built Measat birds up until now.But my understanding is that Measat is upset with BA over quality issues, so they came to LOR.
