I am prepared to deal with levels of confidence, or of what one may call "settledness", as a substitute for the term "absolute", which means without qualification. Since it is impossible to prove that objects of consciousness are exactly the same as as objects in themselves, we confine ourselves to a phenomenological overview of the situation, and inventory consciousness itself, and the way in which objects are presented to it. There is a high degree of confidence in the accuracy and universality of my inventory, insofar as human beings appear to share basic features of consciousness, but I admit, either might be questioned on the margins. Nevertheless, I have a high degree of "settledness" over most of these issue, and no on the objections I have so far heard has been sufficient to unsettle me with doubt........
