not so horrific really, TimTex
imagine 15 ambush deaths per week
that would be 750 per year
maybe not that many, maybe it is
750 is not a figure that would qualify as horrific or huge
not enough to arouse enough grapevine talk

my guess is most ambushes occur at night, mostly in armed camps where soldiers live, away from the cities where the press are located
have you been to Afghany?
I hear and read that press reporters are 95% located in cities and large towns
they are staying completely away from warlord centers near Islamabad border

the press covered the assassination and the failed attempt
those happened in the city of Kabul
otherwise, they are told of ambush deaths and accidental deaths in military briefings
they are being bottlefed via briefings on almost all events not occurring in Kabul and Kandahar

some trivia: did you know the origin of the name Kandahar?

the press are not scattered all across the country
I dont know where you got that
Afghany is 50% larger than Texas
roads are almost nonexistent
bands of robbers, killers, rapists are still along the countryside
press reporters are advised NOT to roam the countryside
especially at night
this is not San Antonio

p.s. Kandahar = Urdu for Alexander (the Great)
