Actually, my first thought when I saw this was that it might be the other way 'round...SEC talking to Siebel. Like you, I suspect employees rather like the idea of options, and would take them over paycheck cash if given the choice.

However, I prefer a company use vesting of stock grants rather than options. From an employees view, I wouldn't see a difference. Shareholders would know the costs exactly in such a case, thus my preference. The report we have now does not say anything more than "cancel" but there may also be a "replace with" in there that we don't know about.

I don't know about your sentiments (as a long time proponent and supporter), but I feel watchfulness need to be applied here... customer testimonials being questioned, compensation packages being reviewed, and other analysts saying the category being subsumed. Lots of straws accumulating, IMO.
