My main point however is that as long as they avoid totally screwing things up neither the president nor congress is likely to have a lot of influence. There is only so much they can do to help, there is a lot they can do to hurt.

On this we agree. The notion that presidents get blamed (BUSH 41/43) and get credit (Clinton) for economic circumstances is really one of public misunderstanding, I believe. But that IS the way it is.

At any rate, I think the public's belief that Clinton "created" a great economy is due to one thing: The best snow job ever perpetrated on the American public...
