Before the markets opened Tuesday, Stephen McClellan, a Merrill Lynch analyst who has followed the company for years and often praised it, cited new factors in downgrading EDS stock from "hold" to "sell."

McClellan said EDS faces losses to settle several derivatives deals, such as options contracts, that could eliminate the entire $200 million to $400 million in free cash flow the company had hoped to earn this year and require a charge against earnings of up to 21 cents per share.

The cash-flow crunch could hurt EDS' ability to compete for new contracts, he said. EDS is hoping to land an outsourcing deal as early as this week with Procter & Gamble Co.
