Another thing coriolis may be useful for, is if you are in a dragline or backhoe. Knowing the force, as an operator you may USE THE FORCE, YODA. Or is it "use the force, Mark Hamelin", I forget... Anyway if you turn your turntable to the right, the earth turns underneath you the other way, so the forcepower and gearwear is less to make the turn.. Isn't it? But if you turn to the left, you get the earth turning with you, so the shovel turns more in space,
There is an important effect if you install large rotating mills, shafts or horizontal washing machines. If you install them facing north, and turn them counter clockwise, then the earth turns around the bearing clockwise looking north, once in 24 hours. If you rotate the mill clockwise looking north, you get one more turn per day in space as the earth is turning the mill by gravity in space. (It orients itself due to gravity facing away from the centre of the earth.) Run cntr clockwise and it subtracts one rotation in 24 hours.
My question is, which is better? If the one extra turn in space better for the same horsepower as you get if you turn clockwise, or do you use less power turning anti-clockwise as you get the same movement relative to the bearing, but the inertial movement in space is less as the earth is supplying part of that turn, so you use less power? |
