Re: "Why should the old play golf and shuffle board while the young people can't afford to buy a house because they are taxed to death."

I bought my first home in 1975 for $13,900. (My house payments were about $110 a month.) House was in bad shape. Wife and I fixed it up and sold it for $33,000 five years later. If I didn't know how to wire a closet light or reroof my garage, I went to the public library and got a book on the subject. Same story with the second home. Doubled my money. Same story with third home, a grand 1897 Queen Anne that I'm still rehabbing.

Aw, gee, Ron, ain't it a shame that Johnny (age 25) and Mary (age 24) can't move right now into a $250,000 home in the 'burbs ... just like their parents live in. Boo hoo hoo. It tears me up. It's beneath Johnny and Mary to buy a fix-er-upper in the city because, dammit, they're good little Republicans and they're entitled to a life of comfort in the 'burbs and entitled to play golf every weekend. They're entitled to have their taxes lowered (even though they haven't contributed bo-diddly) so they can move into their "dream home" before they're 28. (Besides, their parents don't want them living "in the city.")

My advice to Johnny and Mary is to get off their butts and quit bitching and start swinging a hammer. Wouldn't you agree?

Speaking of Social Security, I just got my benefit statement from Uncle Sam in the mail the other day. Given the demise of company pension plans because of corporate greed, good ol' Social Security is more important than ever. Wouldn't you agree?
