clappo-
BOC newz.
just so's you'll know what's happening on the rio grande...
The Saturday night raft-up was terrific. We set a new record with six boats tied together. YES... with ROPES!... and minimal screaming. No permanent damage... no rope burns.
We started at the east end of the lake, drifted almost to windsurfer point before the wind shifted, and then got blown back to devil duck cove. We anchored as a floating city (population 11- Mayor G. Simon) and started pulling out every kind of chile stew you can imagine. Green, red, chicken, pork, beef, squirrel...
We all sampled everything - Howard's shrimp gumbo was a nice palate cleanser in between the different chiles. His microwave was out of range to be plugged in so he had to use a propane burner to cook with.
We spent the night on the City of Boats. We even talked about making this the new BOC marina next year in case the old marina is scuttled. All we need is a PWTO (permanent water taxi operator). The wind cried MARY all night long. Every time Mary got up to check anchors we were in a different position... anchor lines were wrapped around each other, Jim's dagger board, and Tom's motor. I didn't care. I'm writing a book and I need strange nighttime experiences to put in it.
As the moon went down and the sun rose I was awakened by the sound of duck fighting. Devil Ducks! I crawled out into my cockpit to watch. It was boring - it was like the Deming duck races. The BIG duck won.
I put on a pot of coffee. Jim and Angela passed around the cake that they'd gone to retrieve from the car during their full moon sail during the night. It was delicious. NO! I don't want the recipe. I want Angela to make it for me once a year. And I want Jim to serve it to me while I lie in a hammock on my deck reading Cruising Magazine. That's what I want. Yes! I do. Just in case anyone's interested.
After a couple of cups of coffee we sailed en masse (jibs only) back across the lake and up the river while Kathleen and Mary McGraine cooked a wonderful breakfast buffet of scrambled eggs, bacon, fried potatoes, more chile and hot tortillas. We passed the time sipping Tom and Toni's bloody marys while we waited for the buffet to commence. Howard said they tasted very Russian. Howard has traveled more than I... maybe they don't have celery in Russia... these tomato/vodka drinks had no celery.
It was the best buffet and the best cruise I've been on yet. Thanks for the idea and the invitation Greg! And thanks to the imaginations of the people of the BOC... there is always something far beyond expectations at every event we have. You people are inventive... I think it's due to the fact that we have NO RULES... nothing holding anyone back from exploring new territory and slipping in wonderful surprises every time we get together.
This Saturday is the National Public Lands Day Clean-up. Several of us are planning to go up Friday (September 27) and spend the night at the marina so we'll be there for the 7:30 AM gathering. We'll be doing some feasting and sipping Friday night - any and all are encouraged to join us Friday and/or Saturday. Surprises are also encouraged and welcome.
Nothing official is planned for the rest of the season but I know that most everyone is up for one more race or cruise in October. If anyone has ideas, surprises or invitations for me to send out - email or call me!
