Current WSJ item:

Hewlett-Packard plans to cut 1,800 jobs beyond the 15,000 previously planned reductions, citing continued weak demand for technology products as it integrates Compaq.

IMHO the Dell/Lexmark deal could well be quite dire for HPQ. Exactly how bad HPQ gets hurt depends to some extent on how the share that Dell takes from HPQ splits out between inkjets and higher-margin laser printers, but either way it's going to be a major blow. And probably a nice boost to Dell.

If HPQ disintegrates it should be a help to Sun and a blow to Intel. HPQ and Intel are pinning their Itanium server hopes on each other to a significant extent (with .NET thrown in the mix for good measure). If Sun manages to weather the downturn intact, a meltdown in the lead dog of the Itanium OEM pack should be of some help when a recovery finally shows up. And a meltdown is not at all out of the question if HPQ's bread-and-butter printer consumables business is significantly impaired by Dell. They're not making any money anywhere else.
