>> How can Sharon, you, Bush or anyone deal in the face of incessant suicide bombings. Don't they need to end? <<

how can the palestinians deal in the face of their leader arafat under arrest and the entire palestinian people under constant siege? perhaps it is the israeli occupation that needs to end before the peace process can be moved along.

>> You're a bit like Chamberlain, you think noninvolvement gets you somewhere, it does,... into the grave early. <<

i would expect this pathetic argument in light of the constant lies and propaganda constantly being force-fed to ignorant americans. i would suggest you stop watching pundits on tv and radio who like to throw the neville chamberlain charge of appeasement around and actually poke your nose into a few books about military history. or you can just pay attention and let me educate you.

people that love to trash neville chamberlain are ignorant of the fact that the nazi industrial war machine was capable of cranking out several times as many planes as britain and france. there was no other alternative than to "appease" hitler at munich. if chamberlain had stood up to hitler at munich and started a war, germany's superior military industrial machine would have wiped britain off the map. neville chamberlain's "appeasement" bought time for the british to get their war machine in gear so they could eventually withstand hitler's attack.

the worst mistake neville chamberlain made was to not appease hitler even further! after hitler violated the agreement and damaged chamberlain's pride he felt he had no choice but to declare war after hitler invaded poland. hitler clearly had designs to the east, and was going to attack the soviets. by making the foolish war guarantee to poland and honoring it by declaring war, britain and france only served to bring hitler's wrath upon themselves early, giving the soviets a couple more years to prepare. if britain would have continued a policy of "appeasement" hitler would have turned to the east to take on the soviets and britain and france could have had that extra couple of years to prepare. after hitler and stalin bloodied each other a rejuvenated britain could have stepped in and dictated a just peace.

do you think it was just a coincidence that the united states and the soviet union emerged as the the two great superpowers post world war two? of course not. they were the two major war powers that managed to avoid entering the war the longest. of course it didn't hurt that the united states was an ocean away from the theatre of battle.

true statesmen seek to keep their nations out of war unless absolutely necessary. wars destroy empires. if the united states continues to embark on moral crusades around the globe like the british empire did, we will be involved in endless wars and the sun will set on our empire just as it did with the british.
