Joan, All of the stuff you mentioned is part of the trade deficit and gets counted in the numbers. The numbers are simple to calculate, though getting them can be difficult. But it comes down to we sold China X and they sold us X + some huge number. Intel, MSFT etc. have to report their #s to The Dept. of Commerce.

The question then is, if we are doing so well, shouldn't the trade deficit swing to a surplus? If others are buying our technology leadership, you can't balance that with cases of Dom Perignon, though I have tried. -g- And the answer, IMHO, is that we are creating paper assets that we then use to buy foreign goods. We are in such a "leadership" position that we don't even buy our own products. -g- That may be simplistic, but something about the trade #s do not jive with the optimism about the economy. MB
