Thanks Norm.

I started taking a night class at the local community
college. It's a workshop for creative writing.

Last night was our first class.

An interesting array of people were sitting in this
classroom with me. There were a few retired people there.
One older gentleman got to read aloud some of the stuff he
scribbled during the 10 minute writing session.

It was wonderful.

He spoke about his childhood and how he used to spend all
his time down by the Hudson River in Poughkeepsie.
He spoke of what the river was like when he was young.
It was like a personal history lesson of this area.

I could have listed to him speak all evening long.
He had that half tired, grandfatherly tone to his voice.
He drew on many of his personal experiences there.
The room grew quieter with each word.

All of us aspiring writers were leaning over in their seats
to get a better look at him as he spoke.
Many of us were studying the lines of his loose skinned
face and how they moved with each sentence. How he had to
repeatedly prop up his dated eyeglasses as he peered down
at his spiral bound writing tablet.
It was almost like we were trying to absorb as much of him
as we could to possibly use him as a character for
something of our own.

The class room was filled with characters.

There were a lot of extroverts who seemed to love the sound
of their own words flowing out of their own mouth. They
could not wait to share them.
There were introverts like myself who would turn bright red
while reading aloud. You could almost see their pulse
through the skin on their neck. But then you could see a
smile form as they began to read something they felt a
little bit proud of.

I think this class is going to be a great learning
experience for me.

I've absorbed so much already in one day and the teacher
hasn't even taught us anything yet other than telling us
to economize our words and keep the descriptions simpler.

We will meet once a week for a approx. 6-8 weeks.
(I forget when it ends.)

I imagine I won't want this workshop to end.
