I'm increasingly ready to discuss that seriously.
These guys try to hide it, but they are all interconnected, IMO. It all seems to have started in the '30s, in Egypt, with "Baathist" National Socialism (Arab nationalism),and the "Muslim Brotherhood" appearing at about the same time. They have produced the Governments of Iraq, Syria, Egypt and Iran.
There are all sorts of minor groups within the Arab countries. The Kurds we know a bit about. Many Others are really unknown to us. For instance, the "Amazigh" people are known as "Berbers" and were the first inhabitants of North Africa. They are Muslims, but do not consider themselves to be "Arabs." They speak a language called Tamazight. They are in Algeria, Libya, Tunisia and Morocco.
When I read the books on our Intelligence efforts in the ME, the constant is the interconnections between these various "Terror" groups. It isn't as monolithic as the Communists were, but they work in concert when they can.
The problem with getting our Government to do something about these Terrorists is that it finds it difficult to "Fine Tune" it's efforts. It is like moving an Elephant. You have to push like hell to get it moving, and once you do, it is hard to change its direction. So dealing with these terrorists turns into the old "Kill them all and sort them out later" approach. |
