I'm not as prepared as you are to let society dictate to me what is right and wrong.

For example, female genital mutilation is the norm in some societies even today. Fathers who refuse to have this operation performed on their daughters are violating a basic social norm which clearly applies to their situation. By your lights, they are behaving very badly. By mine, they are behaving very well.
