My comments have to do more with the underlying rationale, or value, rather than a particular practice. Assuming the rationale for genital mutilation is to make women more virtuous, one can argue that such an operation will not forestall illicit emotional bonds, nor a willingness to please the man one cares for, and therefore is a pointless practice. If one intervenes cross- culturally, one might have to justify aggressive interference with someone else's custom, for example, arguing that tolerance of the practices of others does not extend to child- abuse. In any event, whatever the operative values that would normally allow the practice to continue, one has to have arguable reasons to contradict them in this case........
