I agree with your take on finding coal companies with acceptable debt levels.

The problem with natural gas or even oil for electrical power generation is the economics does not allow for these fuels to be used for the work horses in the grid. Natural gas can be used to supply peak hour supplies. Low sulfur coal and Nuclear energy are the lowest cost clean economically viable fuels.

Natural gas for heating is the way to go as long as the cost of natural gas stays relatively cheap.
