Problem is "hammer" is a code name that refers to a family of chips but "Merced" is a code name that refers to a specific processor. "Hammer" vs. IA-64, or even K8 vs. IA-64 is a more accurate comparison. If you're specifically referring to high end servers, "Opteron" vs. "Itanium 3" is probably the most accurate (unless the "Madison" product becomes an "Itanium 2A" or some such). Although the "Opteron" really isn't going to go up against IA-64 as it doesn't have the capability, it's targeted squarely at Xeon...
