Mahogany is very sturdy, as well as attractive.

After Jefferson died, Monticello was sold to a family named Levy, the patriarch being a naval captain. It was not bought back and restored until the 1920's, I believe, perhaps later. It is odd to walk around the grounds and come upon a cemetary with Jeffersons and Levys intermingled. The Star of David on the headstones are a nice reminder that the United States has always been a shelter for religious minorities.......
