You create a false dichotomy.

I don't know anyone in the "back to nature" crowd, and you call it, who wishes the bulk of mankind to live as you claim.

OTOH, there are good arguments to get made for limiting modernization. The article on water use that Karen posted was one -- people who have lots of excess money can use that in ways which are detrimental to others.

If I were putting a counterpoint argument to your and putting up my own straw man, I could say something like, if you wish a society where people who can run with a football in their hands make ten of millions of dollars while students in classrooms go without essential supplies, if you wish a society where one individual can monopolize and control more money than the entire GNPs of some quite populous nations, if you wish a society where cities spend hundreds of millions of dollars on coliseums while schools crumble, then you support modernization.

But my straw man, I recognize, is no more fair than yours. I will withdraw mine if you will withdraw yours.
