I think you're right here.

Twain made that point, that everything in the end is motivated by self-interest.

Neo obviously thinks it's in his best interest to explain his deviations from societal norms. He presumably thinks it's in his best interests to expect others to do the same, and to look down on them if they don't.

But for myself, I don't feel that way at all. Neither, I take it, do you.
