Search for 'Efficiency' Prompts Caliper to Lay Off 10 Percent of Workforce
By a GenomeWeb staff reporter

NEW YORK, Sept. 27 - Caliper Technologies has laid off about 10 percent of its staff, or roughly 25 people, as it underwent a program to streamline its operation.

"As part of our strategic-planning process we review all positions, and as a result we did decide to cut approximately ... about 25 folks," Julie Wood, a Caliper spokeswoman, told GenomeWeb today. "We asked ourselves, 'How can we deploy our resources most effectively?' And that caused us to make the decision to cut."

She said the lab-on-a-chip company looked at all positions but that at a firm like Caliper "that is focused primarily on research and development, the bulk of the folks [who were laid off] came from that department."

Wood stressed that no programs were eliminated, and that the staff reduction did not affect any technology under development. She added that the financial results of the layoffs will "not be significant" in the current quarter, and effects for next quarter have not yet been determined.
